Rodents:

Cotton Rat

Size: Smaller than Norway or Roof rats, their tail is only about half of their body length, and covered with short hair
Color:  Light gray to grayish brown (their young may be almost black)
How to recognize: May be confused with meadow mice, but differ in their larger size and longer tails
Habitat:  Primarily and outdoor rodent, although they may enter structures.  They feed on produce, green vegetation, cotton and various row and feed crops.  Create and use well-defined runways and shallow connecting burrow systems.
Behavior:  Active year-round, nocturnal, and very aggressive towards each other.  Reproduce very quickly and have a life expectancy of about 6 months.  Very important with respect to health concerns and damage to vegetation and crops

House Mouse

Size:  2” to 4” (head to tail)
Color:  light brown or light gray
How to recognize:  small and slender with large ears and small eyes
Habitat: nest within structures or burrows, and establish a territory near food sources
Behavior:  Prolific breeders, they feed mostly on cereal grains, but will eat almost anything.  Nocturnal, they have a very keen sense of hearing, taste, smell and touch.

Norway Rat

Size: Large and robust, adults can reach 16” from nose to tip of tail. The tail is shorter than their body length and scaly and almost completely hairless.
Color:  White, brown, mottled, blackish gray, reddish gray, etc.
How to recognize:  Commonly sold as pet rats, and has been bred for white coloration as “lab rats”.  In relation to its head it has a blunt nose, small eyes, and small ears.  They do a great deal of damage to their habitat by gnawing on everything from plastic and metal pipes, to wires, wood, walls and furnishings.
Habitat:  Normally a ground dweller, it prefers burrows even though they can climb very well.  They swim well and often live in or near sewers or other underground water systems.  Does not generally stray farther from its nest than what is necessary to find food (perhaps only 20 to 30 feet.)
Behavior:  They are nocturnal omnivores, and are often strong enough to free themselves from glue traps. They are not the primary reservoir of bubonic plague, but can carry the disease along with others and commonly bite humans.  Animals are neophobic and may avoid new objects placed in their environment for some time.

Roof Rat

Size: 7” to 8” from head to tail
Color:  Black or brown
How to recognize:  This rat is slender with a tail that is usually longer than the combined length of its head and body.  They are excellent climbers, and often use trees and utility lines to reach food and enter buildings.
Habitat:  They nest inside and under buildings or in piles of trash or wood.
Behavior:  This nocturnal rodent is a plant and animal eater, but is very fond of fruit, especially oranges.  They prefer to forage for food above ground in elevated areas both indoors and out.
